Mercedes-Benz has facelifted its entire GLE SUV lineup. The first vehicles will reach the showrooms in Europe this summer.

The new GLE has a slightly retouched front bumper and a radiator grille divided by twin horizontal stripes. The headlights and taillights sport different light patterns, there are more paint options to choose from and a few new wheel designs.

Inside, the steering wheel is new and has touch-sensitive panels on the spokes. The displays stay at 12.3 inches of diagonal size, but the infotainment system benefits from a software update bringing additional features and an improved voice assistant. Among other things, it can now plot routes based on the weight of the towed trailer and display additional gauges when going off-road – roll angles, the compass and some others. A ‘transparent hood’ mode has been added, too.

For the interior, buyers can opt for chic chrome or piano lacquer décor, something previously reserved for the Mercedes-Maybach GLS alone.

All powertrains – both gasoline and diesel – are now hybridized. A 48-volt starter built in between the engine and the automatic transmission can briefly boost the output by 20 PS (20 hp / 15 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque.

In Europe, the GLE 450 comes with three liters of displacement and produces 318 PS (314 hp / 234 kW) along with 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. The cheaper of the two available turbo diesels makes 269 PS (265 hp / 198 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. The more expensive option makes 367 PS (362 hp / 270 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).

The GLE 400e now commands a 2.0-liter four-pot and a single electric motor joining efforts for 380 PS (375 hp / 279 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. This version needs 6.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph). Its 2.0-liter diesel counterpart manages 333 PS (328 hp / 245 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). It concludes its sprint in 6.9 seconds. Both versions command 109 kilometers (67 miles) of all-electric range thanks to a large 31.2-kWh battery.

Finally, the entire AMG lineup also now uses electric starters. The GLE 53 enjoys improved induction and new software tweaks, resulting in a torque increase from 520 to 560 Nm (from 384 to 413 lb-ft). The power stays fixed at 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW). As a result, the sprint time goes down from 5.3 to 5.0 seconds.

The range-topping GLE 63 S AMG keeps its 4.0-liter V8 boosted to 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) without any modifications.
