VW Golf R says farewell after decades of service

Volkswagen Group will discontinue the Golf R series later this year, an official statement says. According to the company, the hot hatch will make room for more affordable and environment-friendlier vehicles.
Lately, the German automotive giant has likewise put the Golf Alltrack, the Golf SportWagon and the legendary Beetle out of production.
Despite this, Volkswagen says it has no intention to abandon performance modifications of the Golf completely. In fact, the upcoming Golf Mk8 will be getting one, although the reveal date remains unannounced.
The mainstream Golf 8 will celebrate its first public outing at a dedicated event in the coming autumn. The car is said to ‘bring the infotainment to a brand-new level’. Aside from regular gasoline and diesel powertrains, there will be a couple hybrid variants to choose from. There will be no all-electric version, since the company reserves that honor for the upcoming VW ID.3.
